This time we came to “Chinoike Jigoku” (Bloody Hell Pond) in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture!
This is one of the Beppu specialties, the “Hell Tour,” and it is like a huge, bright red hot spring pond, so it truly lives up to the name “Hell” 😆
The source temperature is 78℃, and 1,800kL of hot spring water naturally gushes out every day .
The depth of hell is estimated at 180m, a veritable bottomless swamp! It’s hell!



The grounds are beautifully maintained and you can even enjoy a foot bath using hot spring water from “Chinoike Jigoku”♪
The huge, bright red “Chinoike Jigoku” is one of the most impressive hells on the tour!

Admission to only the “Chinoike Jigoku” costs 500 yen for adults. There is also a discount ticket for adults that allows you to visit all seven hells for 2,400 yen.

“Chinoike Jigoku” is located about a 5-minute drive from Kannawa Onsen, the central tourist spot in Beppu.
Although the number of buses is limited, there are also buses that depart from Kannawa Onsen.
“Chinoike Jigoku” is surrounded by mountains and is a place full of nature, including mountains and hot springs.

The car park is free and quite spacious, with space for 150 cars.
It’s a large parking lot that can accommodate tourist buses.

If you look closely at Jigoku, you will see that the surface is clear hot spring water, with red mud deposited underneath.
The red mud springs up as hot mud together with the hot springs.

But it’s one big hell!
“Chinoike Jigoku” is the oldest natural hell in Japan, having existed for over 1,300 years , and it is said to have appeared in the Nara period “Bungo no Kuni Fudoki” under the name “Akayusen.”
It’s so old!
A natural hell that has existed in this place since ancient times.

“Chinoike Jigoku” is a place surrounded by mountains and rich in nature, and there is even a small waterfall within the park.

It is said that this is the place where the “Chinoike Jigoku” exploded a long time ago.
The explosion shot the rocks up to a height of about 220m !

You can get a panoramic view of the entire “Chinoike Jigoku” from the high ground in the park.
When viewed from above, it looks like a huge, bright red pond in the mountains!
As far as can be confirmed from books and other sources, it has existed for 1,300 years, so it is likely that “Chinoike Jigoku” has actually been here for a long time before that.
When people first discovered “Chinoike Jigoku”, they must have thought the huge red hot spring was indeed “hell.”

Within the park, there is a foot bath that uses hot spring water from “Chinoike Jigoku.”

A large amount of hot spring water is pouring out with great force!
When you taste the spring water from the spout, it’s quite sour !
There is also a strong smell of iron .
It’s a very strong hot spring !
The water quality is acidic sodium chloride sulfate spring.

The hot spring itself is clear, but because it is the same hot spring as “Chinoike Jigoku,” the bottom and edges of the footbath are stained red by the hot spring components.
It’s a foot bath with hot spring water that is rich in hot spring ingredients♨️

Blood Pond Ointment

They sell a skin medicine called “Blood Pond Ointment” which is made from the red mud from “Chinoike Jigoku”(Blood Pond Hell).
The history of “Blood Pond Ointment” is long, with records apparently dating back to the Meiji period.
There are apparently still photographs of soldiers coming from Hell to collect mud to use as a wound medicine during the war.



It is often said that hot spring ingredients are good for the skin and body, so the mud from “Chinoike Jigoku” must be good for your skin!
It’s a traditional skin remedy made from mud from hell.
Dog run


There is also a dog run within the grounds of “Chinoike Jigoku.”
The only place on the hell tour that has a dog run is “Blood Pond Hell” 😄🐶
