Hello! I’m Hitapapa and I love hot springs.
This time, we came to take a dip in the family bath at Hyotan Onsen, a day-spa facility in Kannawa Onsen, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture!
It is located very close to Beppu’s tourist attractions, including Sea Hell, Monk’s Hell, and Cooking Hell, and can be reached on foot from the tourist center.
It is also located right next to National Route 500 and has a large free parking lot, so it is easily accessible by car.
Hyotan Onsen has a total of 14 family baths (private baths) (4 open-air baths and 10 indoor baths) .
All of the hot springs are 100% natural spring water , and no water is added, heated, circulated, or disinfected with chlorine, so you can enjoy high-quality, authentic hot springs 😆♨️
All of the family baths at Hyotan Onsen are spacious and clean, making it a great place for families with small children to use.
While the exterior has a calming atmosphere and looks like a modern hot spring facility, it is actually a long-established hot spring that was founded in 1922 !
Now, let me introduce you to the family bath at “Hyotan Onsen” 😄

There is also a large public bath with a variety of hot springs.
The exterior of “Hyotan Onsen”
Hyotan Onsen is located in the Kannawa Onsen area, just a short walk from the tourist spot, Hell Tour.
It’s located a little way down an alley off National Route 500.
At the entrance there is a large sign that says “100% source water!”
At Hyotan Onsen, you can enjoy 100% natural hot spring water without adding water, heating, circulating, or chlorine disinfection.
This hot spring was founded in 1922, making it quite old.
It’s actually a long-established hot spring that was founded in 1922.
It is one of the largest day-use bathing facilities in Beppu.
Parking is free and spacious.
There is a free foot bath on the premises.
This is “Yumetake,” a bamboo hot spring cooling device that is a Beppu specialty.
Beppu has an abundance of hot spring water and the natural power is so strong that the source temperature is nearly 100°C, which is apparently a problem as it is too hot. However, this bamboo hot spring cooling device is an incredible product that can cool 100°C boiling water to around 47°C in just a few seconds!
The structure is quite simple; the hot spring water travels up the bamboo and breaks into tiny droplets, allowing the temperature to drop instantly.
The spring water is not diluted by adding water, so it’s eco-friendly too ♨️
The hot spring water is poured in from above, and it has turned quite brown due to the hot spring deposits!
This is proof that the hot spring is rich.

Check in and head to the family bath
Check availability at the “Family Bath Reception” just inside the building.
There are a total of 14 family baths (4 open-air baths, 10 indoor baths).
If there is space available, you can just take a bath.
It seems that you can also make reservations in advance.
This time, I visited first thing in the morning, but two of the four open-air baths were already reserved.
Thanks to visiting first thing in the morning, I was able to take a dip in the open-air bath!
Once you check in and pay the fee, you will be given the key to the family bath and a basket containing a hair dryer.
The usage time is 60 minutes.
Go outside the building where the reception is located and go to the family bath.
This time, we will be using “Hana” out of the four open-air baths.
All the bathrooms are about the same size.
There are 4 open-air family baths and 10 indoor baths.
Let’s take a bath in the family bath at “Hyotan Onsen”!
Dressing room
It is a spacious changing room.
It is equipped with air conditioning, a sink, benches, and a shelf for storing luggage.
Insert a coin to enter the hot spring water
The family bath is kept clean because the water is completely replaced every time.
There are coins in the changing room, and when you insert the coin, hot spring water will automatically pour into the bathtub.
At first, the bathtub looks like this, with no water in it.
When you insert a coin, hot spring water comes out with great force!
It will fill up in about 5 minutes.
Even after the bath is full, the hot spring water continues to flow weakly for 60 minutes, maintaining a natural flow from the source, so the hot spring water is constantly overflowing, allowing you to enjoy a pleasant bath.
The hot spring is replaced every time, so it’s hygienic.
Steam bath
There was a spot in the open-air bath where steam was overflowing and I wondered what it was, and it turned out to be a steam bath!
When you open the door, steam comes gushing out!
The steam from the hot springs smells great!
It’s a steaming bath for one person, and you sit inside.
The estimated usage time is less than 5 minutes.
I felt like I was going to get hot after just a few seconds in the bath.
You can also experience steam baths.
Washing area
There are two washing areas equipped with showers, body soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
100% natural hot spring water
After 5 minutes the hot spring water has accumulated so it’s time to take a bath!
The stone bathtub is filled with plenty of high-quality Kannawa hot spring water.
The source temperature is 97.5℃, so it is a hot spring overflowing with the power of the earth, just before boiling.
Even after the bath is full, the hot spring water continues to flow, so it continues to overflow from the bath.
This is a 100% natural hot spring that does not require adding water, heating, circulation, or chlorine disinfection !!
Beppu has an abundant supply of hot spring water from the source, and the temperature is high, making it a hot spring that is truly overflowing with energy. In contrast, I think it is rare to find hot springs in Beppu that are circulated and disinfected with chlorine.
I have been to over 100 hot springs in Beppu so far, but the only ones that circulated and disinfected the water with chlorine were the large baths in some of the huge hotels.
Even in famous hot spring areas, many of them use circulation and chlorine disinfection, but in Beppu, most of the hot springs are direct flow from the source, which is really amazing!!
The 100% natural hot spring feels amazing!
There are plants and it looks like a small open-air garden bath.
There is a tap so that you can add water if the hot spring is too hot, but we didn’t need to add any.
The hot spring water, which is on the verge of boiling, is cooled effectively by a bamboo hot spring cooling device, so I could enjoy a comfortable bath at just the right temperature without adding any water.
When I visited in February, there was no need to add water and it was at just the right temperature.
The sound of the hot spring water pouring is soothing…
The hot spring is almost colorless and transparent and has a very soft texture .
There is no smell of sulfur, but you can still faintly sense the unique scent of hot springs .
When I tasted the spring water, it tasted a little salty
. (It is not drinkable, so taste it at your own risk!)
It’s a hot spring with a very soft texture.
The spout of the hot spring is brown due to deposits from the hot spring.
The hot spring ingredients had solidified into a white, spiky mess.
When I touch it, it’s really hard and hurts!
Hot spring analysis report
I thought the hot spring water felt really soft and gentle, so when I looked at the ingredients, I found that it contained 478mg/l of metasilicic acid, which has moisturizing properties!
It is said that water with metasilicic acid of 100 mg/ℓ or more makes the skin moist and smooth, making it a ” beauty skin bath .”
I, a man in my 40s, also let the hot spring water soak into my face.
It’s a beauty bath rich in metasilicic acid ♨️
