The exterior of Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku

A hot spring hotel where you can experience both Japanese and Western styles.
Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku is the only large inn and hotel in Kawatana Onsen, so it is quite noticeable and easy to find.

A dragon statue based on the “Blue Dragon Legend” that is passed down in Kawatana Onsen.
Pretty cool.

Free parking is available for guests of Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku.
It’s quite spacious.

This is the entrance to the hotel lobby.
The lobby is quite modern and stylish.

If you are a day tripper wishing to dine and use the hot springs, you can go up these stairs to the hotel and a separate building where you will find the restaurant and large public bath.
(You can also take the elevator from inside the hotel.)
Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku is actually the oldest hotel in Kawatana Onsen, having been founded around 1830 during the Edo period and continuing in business for about 200 years!
Let’s enjoy Kawara Soba at “Kawara Soba Main Store Otafuku”!
It’s a great deal to combine meals and hot springs !
If you spend 1,210 yen or more per person at the restaurant, you can enjoy the hot springs on weekends, holidays, and for adults for just 590 yen, instead of the usual 1,150 yen.
By the way, one serving of Kawara Soba costs 1,210 yen, so if you eat Kawara Soba you can enter the hot springs at a cheaper price.
( In simple terms, “Kawara Soba + Onsen” costs 1,800 yen.)
When paying at a restaurant, if you mention that you would also like to take a bath in the hot springs, you can purchase a hot spring ticket at a discounted price.
If you would like to take a dip in the hot spring before having a meal, tell the receptionist that you would like a set of hot spring and meal, and on weekends and holidays you can enter the hot spring for 590 yen and receive a meal voucher worth 1,210 yen.
Whether you choose the meal first or the hot spring first, the “bath + meal ticket set” costs the same 1,800 yen.
Why not try the combination of Kawara Soba and hot springs?
You can enjoy Kawara Soba and hot springs as a set for 1,800 yen

Atmosphere inside the store
We went to the restaurant “Kawarasoba Otafuku” in the Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku.

It has a Japanese restaurant atmosphere and has about 40 table seats in total.
The restaurant has only table seating and is very clean.
Kawara soba (1 portion 1,210 yen)
Let’s try Kawatana Onsen’s specialty, “Kawara Soba”!
The photo shows a serving for three people.

The dish is served on a piping hot tile, which is topped with green tea soba noodles, beef, golden egg, spring onions, lemon, and grated momiji leaf.
The soba noodles are served with warm soba sauce made with Japanese-style stock.

It’s a stunningly beautiful finish from any angle!
It is hard to find a local gourmet dish that is as photogenic and visually striking as this one .
Local gourmet food with the most stunning visuals!

The soba noodles and ingredients are served on top of a thick, real tile.
The tiles are really hot so be careful not to get burned!
Be careful not to get burned by hot tiles

The dish is luxuriously topped with beef on top of the green tea soba noodles.
It’s delicious to eat as is, but if you dip it in soba soup the umami will dissolve into the soup, enhancing the flavor of the soba noodles as you eat them.
The taste is good but a little hard.

Golden thread eggs are colorful and have a delicious fluffy texture.

Lemon and grated maple leaf are essential dishes at Kawara Soba.
By soaking lemon and grated maple leaves in soba soup, the soup instantly becomes four times more delicious (no lie)!
Don’t just soak the lemon in the soba soup, try squeezing it with chopsticks to release the juice!
If you squeeze some lemon into the soba soup, it becomes even more delicious!

This spring onion is a great supporting actor in Kawara Soba!
When you eat soba noodles from the side, the green onions always roll off onto the tiles, and the onions get grilled on the tiles!
It’s delicious when you put grilled green onions in the soba soup!

Deep green tea soba noodles.
It has a chewy texture and is delicious.

Warm, rich soba soup with a rich dashi flavor.
The soba soup itself is really delicious, so try sipping a little of it first.

Put the green tea soba noodles and ingredients into the soba soup and enjoy!
Delicious!!!!
Kawara Soba is delicious!!!
The soba soup, green tea soba noodles, ingredients, lemon, and grated maple leaf all come together to create a unique flavor and umami that you won’t find in any other gourmet dish .
Kawara soba is so delicious♪♪

As you eat your Kawara Soba, the cha soba noodles heated on the hot iron plate will become golden brown .
These burnt parts are delicious!!
At first, the soba noodles have a chewy texture, but as they are cooked, they gradually become crispy.
Kawara Soba is twice as delicious as one dish!
The crispy burnt parts that have been left for a while are delicious.

By the way, the photo above shows the roof tiles at the entrance of Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku.
The tiles actually used on roofs and the tiles at Kawara Soba are indeed the same!!
Kawara Soba is so amazing!!
Children’s lunch (1,100 yen)
My eldest son, who is 7 years old, ate Kawara Soba with the adults, but in our household, it seems that small children don’t like the taste of Kawara Soba very much, so we ordered something from the children’s menu.
My eldest son didn’t like Kawara soba until he was about 5 years old. (My family goes to Kawatana Onsen quite often to eat Kawara soba.)

I ordered a children’s lunch for my 4-year-old second son.
It’s so luxurious!!
An elaborate and authentic dish with fried shrimp and hamburger steak!!
I was surprised at how high the quality is.
Children’s curry (770 yen)

I ordered a children’s curry for my 2-year-old third son.
No matter which restaurant they go to, kids this young always end up liking udon or curry (laughs).
There is a children’s menu, so it’s okay to come with small children who can’t eat Kawara Soba♪
Menu
In addition to Kawara Soba, the menu is quite extensive, including eel hitsumabushi, set meals, set menus, and a la carte dishes.
The menu is very extensive!

Kawara soba for home and souvenirs

They also sell Otafuku Kawara Soba noodles to take home or as souvenirs!
If you give it as a souvenir to someone who has never tried Kawara Soba, they will be delighted♪
Kawara soba also makes a great souvenir!
Hot Spring
After dinner, let’s go to the hot springs!
Entrance to the hot spring

If you go down the corridor next to the restaurant mentioned earlier, you will find the large public bath.

There is a courtyard along the way, which is nicely maintained with trees and a pond.
There is also a bench, and I always sit here with my son after a bath, enjoying a drink and relaxing.
There are vending machines so it feels good to have a smoke here after a bath.
Dressing room

Shoe lockers with keys.

There are a lot of lockers and they all have keys.
Some hot springs do not have lockers with locks, so it’s nice to have lockers with locks available.
Lockers with keys are free of charge.
It’s nice to have free lockers with keys

There are also plenty of washbasins.

The clean sink is equipped with amenities such as hair tonic, lotion, hand soap, combs, and cotton swabs.

There is also a hair dryer.
The changing room is very spacious and clean!
The dressing room is spacious and very clean.
Indoor bath

A large stone indoor bath.
The bathtub is very large and there are many washing areas.

A large bathtub is filled with plenty of hot water .
The indoor bath is completely made of glass, so it gets lots of sunlight and is very bright.

That’s great!
An abundance of fresh hot spring water flows from the spout.
The indoor bath is spacious and the tub is big.
Washing area

There are many washrooms and they are clean.

Body soap, shampoo, and conditioner are provided.
And it’s “POLA”.
It must be a luxury item.
I’ve always wondered why I see POLA body soap, shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap so often when I stay at a hot spring resort. (I’ll look into it next time.)
There are lots of showers and shampoos are provided.
Open-air bath

Go outside from the indoor bath and walk through a passage surrounded by trees to the open-air bath!
I’m naked so it’s pretty cold! I’m going to walk quickly!

The open-air bath is also spacious and clean !!
The place is sunny, so the outside air and sunlight are comfortable .
The open-air bath is spacious, clean, and gives a great feeling of freedom!

Plenty of hot water is pouring out of the spout !!
As a hot spring lover (I was even awarded the title of “Hot Spring Expert” by the Beppu City Tourism Association!), my routine every time I visit a hot spring is to “examine and analyze the hot spring in my own way.”
Specifically, we check the scent, feel on the skin, temperature of the hot spring water at the outlet, and taste of the hot spring water.
There was almost no scent, the water was smooth and not particularly slimy or slippery, and it felt like the most orthodox and simplest hot spring.
If you try tasting the hot spring water coming out of the spout, you’ll notice that it tastes a little salty.
(It’s not drinkable, so taste it at your own risk.)
It’s a pleasant bath with no unpleasant smell that everyone will enjoy.
Because the bathtub is so large, the hot spring water is heated, circulated, and disinfected with chlorine.
It’s a bit disappointing that there’s a chlorine smell, but the overall feeling of cleanliness, spaciousness, abundance of nature , and brightness make this a really great hot spring that makes me want to come back again♪ (I’ve actually been here many times♪)

The open-air bath is decorated with plants like a Japanese garden.
In autumn, the leaves are always falling and floating in the bathtub, which is very elegant.
My son always collects fallen leaves and plays with them.
It feels good to soak in a hot spring surrounded by nature

Once you’ve heated up in the hot springs, come here to relax and feel the nature.
There are usually two wooden beds next to each other where you can lie down, but unfortunately there were none this time.

There is also a cold bath.
It’s quite spacious and clean!
Sauna
There is also a sauna next to the open-air bath.
The wood smells great!
It seemed quite spacious.

Hot spring analysis report
When you come to a hot spring, you will always find this “hot spring analysis report.”
It lists the spring quality, flow rate, location, temperature, and ingredients.
Whenever I come to a hot spring, I like to first take a bath and analyze the ingredients of the water in my own way, and then check the hot spring analysis report after I get out of the bath to check the answers♪ (sorry for the geeky story🙇♂️)
If you’re a fan, be sure to check it out!
It’s fun to look at the hot spring analysis report!!

Shopping at the souvenir shop “Kawatana Komachi”
The souvenir shop “Kawatana Komachi” located inside the building has a wide selection of souvenirs, including Kawatana specialties and Shimonoseki specialties !
Just looking at it is fun!
Be sure to stop by after a meal or a bath.

The lineup is so extensive that it seems as if they have all the souvenirs of Kawatana Onsen and Shimonoseki, including local sake, food made with puffer fish, and sweets!
You can find all sorts of souvenirs from Kawatana Onsen and Shimonoseki here♪
It was a day trip where we could enjoy Kawatana Onsen at our leisure.
“Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku” offers a great value meal and hot spring package, so we highly recommend you try both together .
If you purchase the set, the price of the hot spring will be about half price.
You can enjoy Kawatana Onsen’s specialty “Kawara Soba” and hot springs only here at Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku, so you can enjoy a relaxing day trip .
There is also a souvenir shop inside the building, with a wide selection of souvenirs from Kawatana Onsen and Shimonoseki!
This souvenir shop is fun even just to look at, so be sure to stop by.
The restaurant opens at 11:00, but on weekends and holidays it gets very busy with customers and becomes full by around 12:00 noon.
Therefore, we recommend that you go to the restaurant around 11am when there are fewer customers, eat your Kawara Soba first, and then go into the hot spring after your meal !
The restaurant is quiet around 11:00, and if you go to the hot springs around 12:00 after eating, it will be lunchtime, so the hot springs will also be quiet with few customers .
We recommend you try the following order: meal around 11am → hot springs!
(You can choose to use the hot spring or meal set in any order.)
