[Grilled Curry] “Koganemushi” Sightseeing,Travel,Gourmet (Mojiko,Kitakyushu,Fukuoka,Japan)

Hello! I’m Hitapapa and I love grilled curry!

This time, we will introduce “Koganemushi,” a baked curry restaurant located in Mojiko Retro in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

There are many grilled curry restaurants in Mojiko Retro, but Koganemushi is one of the most popular.

Even though Koganemushi is located a little outside the center of Mojiko Retro, it is so popular that even on weekdays it is already full by 11:45am when it opens, and by noon there is a line.

The grilled curry at this long-established coffee shop is packed with ingredients and, as far as I know, is cheaper than anywhere else (750 yen)!

The curry is so delicious you’ll never get tired of it, and you’ll want to eat it every day.

Now let us introduce you to “Koganemushi,” a very popular baked curry restaurant!

HitaPapa

The exterior of “Koganemushi”

It’s a small coffee shop with a yellow sign that says “Koganemushi” that catches your eye.

It is located along National Route 3, just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Mojiko Retro tourism.

If you continue straight along this road, you will reach the Kanmon Tunnel, which leads to Honshu.

There is quite a lot of truck and car traffic on this road.

There were beautiful flowers placed at the entrance of the store.

The owner’s kind personality is evident in the large number of flowers placed in front of the store.

In fact, the owner’s mother was a very friendly person with a gentle smile.

The atmosphere inside “Koganemushi”

The interior of the store is long and narrow, and there are several table seats just inside the entrance.

There are counter seats in the back.

It has a retro Showa-era coffee shop atmosphere.

The paint on the wooden tables at the counter seats has peeled off around the edges, giving them a nice aged look.

HitaPapa

The retro Showa-era atmosphere of this coffee shop is great!

There are lots of dolls and stuffed toys on display.

There is also a Perman stuffed toy that must be quite rare nowadays (lol)

Menu of “Koganemushi”

The menu mainly consists of grilled curry and hayashi rice.

We also have uncooked curries available.

They also have Neapolitan spaghetti and curry spaghetti, which has a retro Showa-era cafe menu feel and is really nice!

HitaPapa

They also have Hayashi rice and Neapolitan ♪

I’ll enjoy having this!

Grilled curry 750 yen

Introducing “Koganemushi” baked curry!

Many grilled curry restaurants use something like a gratin dish or a clay pot, but Koganemushi uses a large, deep white dish.。

The surface of the cheese is nicely browned.

The bacon is also browned.

Unusually for a grilled curry, it is topped with fried onions!

These fried onions were crispy and delicious!

Rich and full-bodied curry

The curry on the edge of the plate is nicely cooked.

Put just the curry roux in your mouth and check the taste of the curry.

The spices have a gentle aroma, making this a mild curry that is reminiscent of the old days and popular with Japanese people.

It’s a flavor that you’ll never get tired of, making you want to eat it every day.

Plenty of melty cheese!

When you scoop up the generous amount of cheese on the surface of the curry with a spoon, it stretches like this!

I like to first put just the cheese in my mouth and enjoy the taste.

Next, combine the cheese, curry, ingredients, and rice!

Grilled curry is the best!

Crack the soft-boiled egg and let it run.

If you peel back the cheese in the center of the plate, you’ll find a soft-boiled egg hidden inside.

When you crack an egg with a spoon, a runny yolk flows out.

Serve the curry with a soft-boiled egg.

Good!!

Mellow and mild!!

The combination of soft-boiled egg and curry is definitely the best!

Plenty of chunky ingredients!

Koganemushi’s baked curry has so many ingredients!

A typical baked curry has very few ingredients, and most of the time there are almost no visible ingredients, but at Koganemushi, even a regular order of baked curry is packed with ingredients.

HitaPapa

Koganemushi’s baked curry is packed with ingredients!

There is a fried onion in the center.

It’s crispy and super delicious!

It is topped with plenty of bacon.

The bacon is browned and fragrant and delicious.

It’s filled with chunky beef.

It’s rare to find other grilled curry restaurants that serve this much beef.

It also contains asparagus.

There’s a fair amount of it, and it has a nice aroma and a nice crunchy texture, making it a nice accent♪

A big, chunky carrot.

It’s become very soft.

Plenty of corn.

It’s quite unusual to have corn in a grilled curry.

With so many ingredients, it feels like you’re eating a curry-flavored mixed pizza with plenty of cheese and toppings.

And despite all these ingredients, it only costs 750 yen.

As far as I know, it’s cheaper than any other grilled curry restaurant.

HitaPapa

With all this topping and for just 750 yen it’s sure to be cheaper than anywhere else!

Increase the heat with spices!

There are spicy spices on the table.

The curry is medium spicy, so if you like it spicy, add some of these spices.

Such a red spice.

The flavor is good and delicious!

I like spicy food, so once I’m about halfway through the grilled curry, I like to add more and more of these spicy spices.

HitaPapa

If you like spicy food, add some hot spices to make it hotter.

Hitapapa’s recommended
way to eat grilled curry

① Use a spoon to scoop up just the curry roux on the edge of the plate and eat it to check the taste of the curry.

② Mix curry and rice together and eat it as curry rice.

③ Mix the melted cheese and curry together and eat.

④ Break the egg and mix it into the curry little by little as you eat.

⑤ If there are spicy spices on the table, gradually add more.

HitaPapa

Everyone can eat it however they like.

Hayashi rice (large) 900 yen

At Koganemushi, most customers order the grilled curry, but the hayashi rice is also popular and delicious!

The shop sign clearly states “Yaki Curry & Hayashi” ♪

The appearance is luxurious and visually appealing!

Anticipation is building!

By the way, regular hayashi rice is 700 yen, but you can get a large serving for an additional 200 yen.

(Grilled curry, hayashi rice, omelet rice, and spaghetti Napolitana are all available in large portions for an additional 200 yen.)

HitaPapa

If you want to eat a lot, you can get a large portion for an additional 200 yen!

Rich and full-bodied sauce

It’s a sauce that looks rich.

The white part is a mellow white sauce made with fresh cream.

When you put it in your mouth, you’ll be surprised at the richness and depth of flavor!

It tastes just like the hayashi rice you would eat in a luxury hotel!!

You’d be mistaken for thinking this is a restaurant at the Imperial Hotel.

HitaPapa

It tastes just like Hayashi rice from a luxury hotel.

Plenty of beef

It’s got a lot of beef in it and it’s got a lot of flavor.

I think 700 yen for a bowl of hayashi rice with plenty of beef is quite cheap.

HitaPapa

Plenty of beef and great flavor

Plenty of well-fried onions

It is filled with plenty of onions that have been slowly sautéed to give it a slightly fragrant flavor.

The sweetness of onions melts into the hayashi rice.

HitaPapa

Plenty of well-fried onions

Supreme Taste

Mix the Hayashi sauce with rice and eat it with beef and onion for a delicious taste.

The rich, full-bodied sauce is enhanced with the acidity of tomatoes for an elegant flavor.

This is the most delicious Hayashi rice!

There are little chunks of sauce here and there that have probably burnt on the bottom of the pot, but these burnt sauces are delicious!

Eating the burnt parts together adds a nice aroma and is delicious.

HitaPapa

Tastes like the best Hayashi rice!

The mildly seasoned Fukujinzuke pickles add a nice accent.

The hayashi rice is served with fukujinzuke, which has a mild flavor with a slight sourness that gives it an elegant feel.

This fukujinzuke adds a nice accent and makes it delicious!

This is a one-of-a-kind Starbucks that is full of retro feel, so be sure to stop by when you’re sightseeing in Mojiko!

Mojiko Port was one of Japan’s leading international trading ports during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, and the “Old Dalian Route Shed” was built in 1929 (Showa 4) as an international ship terminal building.

At that time, the sea was just 10 meters away from the outer wall of the “Old Dalian Shipping Shed,” and large international ships were anchored there.

In the days before airplanes, it was one of the country’s largest terminals, bustling and supported the movement of people and cargo and international trade.

The Former Dalian Route Shed was built about 100 years ago, and has been restored and preserved to tell the history of Mojiko Port.

HitaPapa

Mojiko Retro is full of things to see!

Thank you for the meal

This time, since it was a very popular restaurant, I arrived before the opening time of 11:45 and waited for it to open, and it was a good idea to arrive early.

The restaurant was full immediately after opening and by 12 o’clock there was a considerable queue.

I went there on another day, and there was still a line at 1pm.

And at around 1:10pm (I was the last customer), the event ended with “SOLD OUT” as shown below💦

When I asked the shop staff, they told me that they usually sell out around 1pm.

The lunch opening hours are 11:45-14:30, but there’s a huge line at 12 o’clock and they’re sold out by 1pm.

If you want to eat at Koganemushi, we recommend going at 11:30am before opening.

Once you try Koganemushi’s grilled curry, you’ll understand why it’s so popular.

It has a rich, full-bodied flavor that never gets boring, making it a curry roux that you’ll want to eat again tomorrow.

It’s packed with ingredients including beef, bacon, fried onions, asparagus, carrots, and corn.

It’s delicious and packed with ingredients, and at 750 yen it’s cheaper than any other grilled curry restaurant I know of.

Koganemushi is located about a 5-minute walk from the center of Mojiko Retro tourism.

If you visit Mojiko Retro, be sure to try the grilled curry at Koganemushi!

HitaPapa

Koganemushi’s grilled curry is cheap and delicious!
