Introducing “Myoban Jigoku” where hot spring steam with a strong sulfur scent sweeps through♨️
Hello! I’m Hita Papa , and I love Onsen and Beppu .
This time, I came to “Myoban Jigoku” in Myoban Onsen, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture.
“Myoban Jigoku” is located in Myoban Onsen, an area of Beppu that has many milky hot springs with a strong sulfur scent.
In “Myoban Jigoku,” hot spring steam is coming out everywhere, and there is a thatched-roof “Yunohana Hut” where natural yunohana is produced; you can feel the power of nature in this hot spring-filled atmosphere!
“Myoban Jigoku” is located opposite “Okamotoya Shop”, which is popular for its Jigoku Steamed Pudding, so if you visit Myoban Onsen, be sure to stop by “Okamotoya Shop” as well.

The exterior of “Myoban Jigoku”

“Myoban Jigoku” is located in the Myoban Onsen area, up in the mountains from the city of Beppu, and is a place rich in nature surrounded by mountains.
Hot spring steam is coming out from the ground all around, and the smell of sulfur is plentiful.

Buy Tickets

Until just now (in the morning), there was a staff member at the reception desk of “Alum Jigoku”, but when I tried to enter at around 12 o’clock, the staff member was gone.
Maybe he went to help out at the Okamotoya shop because they have a lunch menu and it’s busy at lunchtime?
I was told to pay the entrance fee at the Okamotoya shop across the street, so I headed there.

Pay the 200 yen admission fee at the Okamotoya shop and you will be given a ticket.
Once you pay the entrance fee, you can enter Myoban Jigoku.

The Okamotoya shop sold “Yunohana” (hot spring water) produced by Okamotoya at its Yunohana hut.
Yunohana is a crystallized hot spring ingredient and was sold as a natural bath additive .
I’ve bought Yunohana before, and when I put it in my bathtub at home, the water turns pure white, so I can feel like I’m in a hot spring at home.
Stroll through “Myoban Jigoku”
Yunohana hut

Once you enter Myoban Jigoku, follow the route and first visit the Yunohana Hut.
The production of yunohana in the thatched-roof yunohana hut has apparently been going on since the Edo period.

Inside the Yunohana Hut, the ground is covered with thick piles of white and yellow hot spring deposits!
Hot spring steam emerges from the ground, and the hot spring minerals naturally crystallize to form yunohana (hot spring deposits).
The hot spring ingredients are crystallized to create Yunohana.

Foot bath

There is also a foot bath.
It doesn’t look cloudy, but it has a very strong sulfur smell!
There are lots of hot spring deposits floating on the surface of the hot spring.
It is a deep hot spring that looks greenish or yellowish♨️

We continue on through the gardens of Myoban Jigoku.
The route is properly laid out.
Within the park, hot spring steam spews out from all over the ground, filling the air with the smell of sulfur!

The smell of sulfur is amazing!!

There was a former site of alum (yunohana) manufacturing during the Edo period.
Apparently there are hot spring steam fumaroles just 30cm below the surface.
It seems that if you dig just the right amount of ground in the Myoban Onsen area, hot spring steam will come out!
In fact, hot spring steam gushes out from the ground around Myoban Jigoku and the Okamotoya shop.

Steam is gushing out vigorously, and the entire Myoban Jigoku is covered in whitish crystals of hot spring ingredients.
It has a strong sulfurous scent and is irresistible for hot spring lovers!

Spectacular views from the heights

Myoban Jigoku is located on the slope of a mountain, so you will have to follow a designated route inside the park and continue climbing upwards.
Once you reach the top of the hill, there is a small rest area.
From the hilltop you can enjoy a spectacular view of Myoban Onsen, Beppu Bay, and the city of Beppu!
