Hello! This is Hitapapa.
I am a working father of three boys (ages 6, 3 and 1).
It was right in the middle of the Golden Week holidays, and it was the second day of a two-day, one-night trip to Nagasaki city in Nagasaki prefecture with our children (ages 6, 3 and 1)!
Traveling with small children can be difficult in many ways, but we have put together a two-day, one-night sightseeing itinerary for Nagasaki city that is suitable for sightseeing with small children and has the theme of being “fun for both children and adults.”
By the way, please see the article on the sightseeing course for the first day here ↓↓↓

I hope this will be of some help to mothers with small children who are worried, “I want to go on a trip, but it’s going to be a hassle to take my kids with me!”
Now, let us introduce you to a recommended sightseeing course in Nagasaki city (Day 2) that you can enjoy with small children!
Breakfast buffet at “Candeo Hotels Nagasaki Chinatown”
This time, I stayed at the four-star hotel “Candeo Hotels Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown,” located right next to Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown.

Breakfast is a hotel buffet!
I’m excited!

The breakfast buffet venue is next to the front lobby on the 11th floor.
The view from the 11th floor is amazing, and you can enjoy breakfast in a very pleasant atmosphere.

They have Japanese food, Western food, salads, fruits, and desserts.
Drinks include various juices, milk, oolong tea, coffee, etc.

There is also Turkish rice, a Nagasaki staple!
The style is to make your own Turkish rice by serving your own dry curry, spaghetti, pork cutlet, and curry.
This Turkish rice was so delicious that I had seconds!
The kids were also delighted with the Turkish rice.

Rice topped with plenty of mentaiko and miso soup.

Finish off with Nagasaki castella cake and coffee.
The coffee is brewed by a machine using freshly ground beans. You can also have a cafe latte or Americano depending on your preference.
Paper cups are provided so you can take the coffee back to your room.

Glover Garden
On the second day, we visited Glover Garden, a staple of Nagasaki tourism.
Located on a hilltop, Glover Garden offers a spectacular view of Nagasaki’s cityscape, mountains, and sea!
The garden is filled with greenery and flowers, and has an exotic feel to it.
It was a beautiful park and the kids seemed to enjoy it!

Nagasaki is known for its streetcars.
Take the train bound for Ishibashi from Shinchi Chinatown Station and get off at Oura Cathedral Station, the third stop.
Arrived in a few minutes.
Streetcar fares are a flat rate across the entire line: 140 yen for adults (junior high school students and above), 70 yen for elementary school students, and free for children under elementary school age.
It’s easy to understand!!
You can use various transportation IC cards, so you can get on and off smoothly.

Before you can enter the park you have to climb quite a few slopes and stairs (and are pretty exhausted at this point), but once you’re there you go up a long escalator!
If you take these two escalators, you will arrive at the top of the hill.

Amazing view!!
You can see Nagasaki’s cityscape, mountains, and sea!
You can also see the Mitsubishi shipyard.

“Former Mitsubishi No. 2 Dock House.”
Inside, you can rent medieval European style suits and dresses for a fee.
There were quite a few couples and married couples who changed into suits and dresses, strolled around the park and took photos!
There were also dresses for little girls.

“Former Walker Residence.”

“Former Ringer Residence.”
By the way, the name of the famous Nagasaki Champon chain restaurant “Ringer Hut” is apparently taken from Ringer, a major Nagasaki merchant.

“Old Steele Memorial School”.

“Former Glover House.”
A professional photographer will take commemorative photos for free in front of the former Glover House.
(Small black-and-white photos will be developed on the spot for free, but color photos will incur a fee.)

“Former Jiyutei” and the “Monument marking the birthplace of Western cuisine.”
Jiyutei was a restaurant run by Kusano Takeyoshi, the first Japanese chef to serve Western cuisine.

Japan’s earliest asphalt road.
And as a fun element of Glover Garden, there are three “heart ♡ stones” buried in the ground within the garden, so be sure to try and find them!

The first one was located under the compass in the garden in front of the former Glover House!

The second one was on the way down from the former Jiyutei to the former Glover House!

The third one was at the curve just before heading from the Former Glover House to the Rest House!

And finally there was the fourth heart stone!
It is located on the deck just outside the souvenir shop inside the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Museum inside the park.
The slope leading from the tram station to Glover Garden is lined with many souvenir shops, so we did a little shopping there!

When you think of Nagasaki, you think of castella.
Out of the many castella manufacturers out there, we chose castella from Izumiya this time!
Each bottle costs about 1,000 yen.
The golden-colored dough is moist and fluffy, with a delicious hint of sugar!

This is a castella cake that I bought at a different store!
It’s the same size as a regular castella cake and costs only 400 yen!
As for the taste… it’s delicious!!
It appears to be made from the edges that inevitably come off when making authentic castella, so it tastes absolutely delicious!
It’s perfect as a souvenir for yourself.

This is Nagasaki’s famous confectionery, Cruz’s “Happy Cruz Strawberry Flavor.”
In fact, this is my first time trying Cruz, a Nagasaki specialty.
The white chocolate mixed with strawberries is sandwiched between a crunchy crust and is delicious.

Iwasaki Honpo’s braised pork buns ”Kakuni manjyu”
When you think of Nagasaki, you think of “Kakuni Manju”!
When it comes to Kakuni Manju, Iwasaki Honpo is the place to go!
Iwasaki Honpo has multiple stores in Nagasaki city, including at Nagasaki Station, near Chinatown, Hamamachi Arcade Shopping Street, and Nagasaki Airport, so you can easily buy and eat takeaway food♪

There are a lot of people lined up.

The fluffy dough goes perfectly with the sweet and spicy sauce of the thick braised pork!
500 yen each.
Very popular with children too!
Turkish rice and milkshake at ”Cafe Olympic”
When you think of Nagasaki, you think of Turkish rice!
Also, milkshakes apparently originated in Nagasaki!
Let’s go to Touko for some Turkish rice and milkshakes!
It’s 100% guaranteed that your kids will love it!

It is located in Hamamachi Arcade Shopping Street.
Exterior

Cafe Olympic is located on the second floor, across from the department store Hamaya.

It is a fairly old establishment, having been founded in 1963.
This is a coffee shop with an old-fashioned retro feel.
Turkish rice 1,430 yen

This is the classic “Turkish Rice.”
Tomato sauce pasta, pork cutlet, rice, and salad all served on one plate!!
Truly a kid’s lunch for adults!!

The sauce has a flavor similar to demi-glace sauce.
The slightly sweet sauce, which is different from both curry and hayashi rice, goes really well with it!

The rice is colored with turmeric.
The yellow color stimulates the appetite!

I thought the pasta was Neapolitan, but it was actually authentic tomato sauce pasta!!

Salad with sesame dressing.
I’m sure it would be delicious to have the tomato sauce pasta, pork cutlet, rice, and salad all on separate plates like a lunch set, but what’s great about Turkish Rice is that it’s all served on one plate!
As you eat, the sauce naturally mixes together all the dishes on the plate, creating an indescribable deliciousness!
This is the ultimate adult children’s lunch!
Turkey Hamburger 1,430 yen

This is “Hamburger Türkiye”.
The pork cutlet from the Turkish rice dish mentioned earlier has been turned into a hamburger steak.

The hamburger steak is covered in plenty of sauce, which mixes well with the rice!
The hamburger turkey was very popular with the kids.
Milkshake 990 yen

I ordered three milkshakes for 990 yen each!
The three lined up make quite an impact!
There are four ice creams that taste like condensed milk and have cute cherries on top.
Actually, I’ve had “milkshake-flavored” snacks before, but this was my first time trying a real milkshake.
It has a lighter texture and taste than ice cream, so even though it contains four ice creams, it’s so light that you can eat it all in one go♪
The milkshakes looked so cute and were a big hit with the kids!

End of Day 2 (Conclusion)
We love traveling, and before we got married we often went to many different places together.
After our first child was born, we often went on trips to hot springs that we could easily get to by car, but since our second and third children were born, we haven’t been able to go on trips at all…
We managed to take our three children on a trip to a hot spring resort, but they were still crying and screaming at the resort, so we couldn’t have a leisurely meal. (Actually, we had no choice but to take the children outside the dining area because their screaming and crying would be a nuisance to other guests.)
For all these reasons, I had given up on the idea of going sightseeing to tourist spots, as it was just a dream within my wildest dreams. However, I felt sorry for my eldest son (age 6), who is now much less demanding to take care of, and couldn’t go on a trip with his younger siblings (ages 3 and 1), so I thought, “Let’s take a family trip with all three children (ages 6, 3 and 1)!” and that was the trigger for this trip.
Like our family, I think there are many families who are unable to travel when they have small children because the hurdles to doing anything are high, such as “it involves a lot of walking when sightseeing,” “children get bored at places the adults want to go,” “they get tired and start to cry halfway through,” “it’s hard to get them to eat at restaurants,” etc.
However, if you take some steps such as “making a relaxed schedule,” “incorporating fun activities for your children,” “putting your child to sleep in the stroller when they are tired,” and “giving them snacks in moderation,” you can go on a family trip with small children without any stress!
Here are the points that our family focused on when traveling with small children.
① Leave some leeway in your schedule
② Include a place for children to have fun
3. Go eat food your child likes
④ Include places that adults want to go
And a stroller is a must-have item to bring !
By the age of three, children are able to walk quite well, but they will still get tired and unable to walk or will become sleepy while traveling, so if you have a child around the age of three, be sure to bring a stroller!
By the age of 4, your child will be stronger and will no longer need a stroller.
Also, it’s essential to bring some snacks !
If your child gets tired and cranky along the way, or if the adults get bored after visiting a fun tourist spot, giving them some sweets will quickly put them in a good mood!
The effects of sweets are enormous!
This time, we introduced a recommended two-day, one-night sightseeing itinerary for Nagasaki that can be enjoyed with small children. We hope that this will be of some help to parents who are hesitant to travel with their small children!
See you soon!
