[Norfolk Square] Sightseeing,Travel (Mojiko,Kitakyushu,Fukuoka,Japan)

Hello! This is Hitapapa.

This time we will introduce you to Norfolk Square, located in Mojiko Port, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture!

The park is named “Norfolk Square” because Kitakyushu City and Norfolk City in the eastern United States are sister cities.

The most distinctive feature of Norfolk Square is that it is a spectacular viewpoint from which you can see the Kanmon Strait and Kanmon Bridge !

In any case , it’s the best place to get a close-up view of the Kanmon Strait and Kanmon Bridge !

There are many benches lined up in the square, where children can run around and have fun, while adults can sit and enjoy the view, and many people even go fishing.

Basic information about “Norfolk Square”

<Norfolk Square>

[Address] 2-5 Moji, Moji-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture
[Parking] Available (free)

“Norfolk Square” car park

The parking lot is free and is quite spacious and can accommodate many cars.

However, since there are many people using the square and taking walks, it seems that there are always quite a lot of cars parked there.

There is an open space like this in front of the parking lot, which gives a sense of freedom.

HitaPapa

The parking lot is spacious and free.

Entrance to Norfolk Square

At the entrance to Norfolk Square, there is a sign that explains the history of the sister city relationship with Norfolk.

It all started in 1958 when a Japanese ship brought Moji’s elegant Kazeshi dolls to Norfolk.

In 2019, a bronze plaque commemorating 60 years of friendship with the city of Norfolk was installed.

The location of the city of Norfolk in the eastern United States is also introduced.

It’s true that when you hear the name Norfolk, you don’t know where it is and have no idea what kind of place it is.

HitaPapa

Kitakyushu and Norfolk are sister cities.

At the entrance to Norfolk Square, there is Minatoya Senbei, a udon restaurant from the Buzen Urauchikai, a famous udon restaurant in the Kitakyushu region.

Unfortunately, it was a closed day.

All the udon restaurants in the “Buzen Urauchikai” are incredibly delicious, so next time I come I’d like to try “Minatoya Senbei” as well.

HitaPapa

There is also a udon restaurant from the “Buzen Urauchikai” group!

Now let’s go into the square!

Norfolk Square

Square

It’s like a spacious park and the sea breeze is pleasant.

It really feels like a square.

HitaPapa

It’s spacious and kids can run around and play.

The symbolic “Anchor” monument

The large anchor is the symbol of Norfolk Square.

It’s just huge!

This is a monument unique to the port town of Mojiko.

This anchor is very popular with children, who have fun touching it, climbing it, and running around it.

When I was a kid, I used to try climbing up this cliff with my brother.

HitaPapa

The “Anchor” monument has become the symbol of Norfolk Square.

The magnificent Kanmon Straits

As you can see, Norfolk Square offers a spectacular view of the Kanmon Straits!

At least the sea is close!

You can see Shimonoseki on Honshu very close by on the opposite shore!

This is the place where you can really feel that you are at the top of Kyushu.

And you can see the Kanmon Bridge from a beautiful angle!

The Kanmon Bridge is also nearby!

I think Norfolk Square is probably the best place in Mojiko to get the most beautiful view of the Kanmon Bridge.

The angle is just great!

HitaPapa

You can see the Kanmon Strait and the Kanmon Bridge very clearly.

There are lots of benches

Norfolk Square, which juts out into the sea, is lined with benches.

It’s great to feel the sea breeze and watch the ships passing by and the Kanmon Straits.

By the way, as many as 600 ships pass through this narrow Kanmon Strait every day!

Huge ships and large tankers also pass by regularly!

And since the park faces the sea, there are a lot of people fishing there.

Speaking of Kanmon, puffer fish are famous, but if you go fishing in Norfolk Square, you can often catch small puffer fish.

Pufferfish are poisonous, so release them.

HitaPapa

There are many people fishing

Promenade

There is a promenade from Norfolk Square that runs along the seafront to Mekari Shrine, the pedestrian entrance, and the terminal station of the tourist trolley.

I highly recommend this promenade as you can stroll along it while enjoying close-up views of the Kanmon Straits and Kanmon Bridge!

Be sure to take a walk along the promenade!

HitaPapa

Let’s walk along the scenic promenade ♪

Promenade entrance

The promenade starts from Norfolk Square like this.

Close to the sea

The Kanmon Bridge is close by and it’s a really beautiful angle!

HitaPapa

This is the best angle ♪

The sea is so close!

The fast-flowing waters of the Kanmon Straits are crashing hard against the shore.

HitaPapa

The tides in the Kanmon Straits are fast!

The promenade continues on.

Let’s go!

Let’s keep going

There is a big rock like this on the way.

There’s rocks on top of rocks!

The sea seen from this rock is crystal clear and very beautiful.

HitaPapa

The sea looks beautiful from the rocks

When you get close to the Kanmon Straits, where the tides are fast, you can see the tides with your own eyes!

There’s no way I could swim across this to Honshu! LOL

It will definitely be washed away!! lol

Let’s keep going along the promenade that continues!

HitaPapa

The Kanmon Bridge is getting closer and closer!

Birth bath

Along the way, there is a replica of the “Usanyu-i” well that appears in local history.

Apparently, well water naturally gushed forth in this area where the waves crash against the shore.

Sometimes there was seaweed mixed in, but because it was so close to the sea, it didn’t taste salty at all.

During the Genpei War in the Kanmon Straits, the Taira warriors drank this well water to quench their thirst, and so it is also known as “a cup of water for the Taira clan.”

HitaPapa

There’s beautiful spring water around here!

The bridge is approaching

The Kanmon Bridge is getting pretty close now!!

This place is like a square, with a few benches.

From the bench there is a magnificent view of the Kanmon Straits!!

Let’s take a break here and look out at the sea.

HitaPapa

The view of the Kanmon Straits is extremely pleasant.

Right under the Kanmon Bridge

At last, we arrived right under the Kanmon Straits!!!

The pillars are incredibly huge!!!

It’s extremely rare to see the underside of the Kanmon Bridge from below!!

Woohooooo!!!

The Kanmon Bridge stretches in a straight line all the way to Honshu!!!

I’m so excited!!

HitaPapa

I came right under the Kanmon Bridge.

What’s more, there are benches lined up right under the bridge, which is a nice touch.

Enjoy the elegant view of the bridge and the Kanmon Strait stretching out in a straight line directly below the bridge!

We have arrived at Mekari Shrine.

The walking trail ends here for now, but starts again at Mekari Shrine.

We recommend visiting Mekari Shrine, enjoying the view of the shrine and the Kanmon Straits, and then strolling along the promenade.

HitaPapa

The promenade leads to Mekari Shrine.
