This time we came to “Oniishi Bozu Jigoku” (Mud Hell) in Beppu city, Oita prefecture!
Hot spring water bubbles up constantly from the muddy bath, and it is said to be called Shaved Head Hell because it looks like a beautifully shaved head .
There are several mud baths like ponds in the park, and hot springs bubble up from a number of places.
The steam from the mud bath has a strong sulfur scent that will get you in the hot spring mood !



Oniishibozu Jigoku is located in Kannawa Onsen, the tourist center of Beppu, and next to it is Umi Jigoku.
Using “Oniishibozu Jigoku” and “Umi Jigoku” as bases, you can go on a tour of the hells within walking distance and explore the steamy Kannawa Onsen.
Now, let us introduce you to Oniishi Bozu Jigoku!

Admission to Oniishibozu Jigoku alone is 500 yen for adults, but there is also a discount ticket for adults that includes a tour of all seven hells for 2,400 yen.

There is ample free parking for 230 cars.
The parking lot is large enough to accommodate large buses and is shared with the neighboring Umi Jigoku.
If you use this place as your base and go around the surrounding hells within walking distance, you can easily get around.
It can also be used as a base for sightseeing in Kannawa Onsen.
Although it is along the national highway, there are mountains all around, making it very peaceful and pleasant.
It’s a good idea to use “Oniishi Bozu Jigoku” and the neighboring “Umi Jigoku” as your bases for sightseeing.

At Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, there is also a day-trip hot spring facility called Onishi no Yu, which has a large bath with natural hot spring water and a family bath.

The grounds are spacious and well maintained like a park.
The surrounding mountains, the warm sunshine, and the scent of the hot springs will soothe you in nature.
The inside of the park is like a sunny, peaceful park.

Within the park, a large amount of hot spring steam at nearly 100℃ gushes out with great force!
The smell of sulfur is overwhelming!
I love the smell of sulfur, so when I find a hot spring steam spewing out in Beppu, I go downwind and let the steam directly hit my whole body (laughs).

A hot mud hell that gushes out


The mud hot spring is like a pond, with hot spring water bubbling up.
There are several such muddy hells in the park.
There are several mud ponds in the park, and countless hot springs bubble up from them.

Within one hell there are several places where hot springs gush out.

When you look at it up close, it looks more like super thick hot spring mud than a mud bath .
Every time the hot spring erupts, a beautiful gradation of mud spreads out!
It’s a soothing sight that you can look at forever.

There is another mud bath-like hell in another part of the park.
Unlike the huge and impressive blue and red hells like “Sea Hell” and “Pond of Blood Hell,” there are several small, cozy hells, and you can just stare at the hot mud bubbling up.
The mud hot springs are constantly gushing out, making you want to watch them forever♨️

A lot of hot spring steam comes out of the hot mud hell and the smell of sulfur is strong 😆

I wasn’t able to get the timing right to take a photo, but the hot spring water gushing out looks like a beautiful, round shaved head.

I’m sure it’s a mud bath with a richer consistency than any other mud bath out there!
