[Sweets Shop Sanshundo] Sightseeing, Travel, Onsen, Hot Spring, Gourmet (Kawatana, Shimonoseki,Yamaguchi,Japan)

Hello! This is Hitapapa.

This time, we will introduce you to “Gensho Kawatana Manju Honpo Sansyundo,” a long-established sweets shop located in the hot spring town of Kawatana Onsen in Yamaguchi Prefecture!

The company was founded in 1897 !

This is a long-established store that has been in business for three generations since the Meiji era.

The specialties are “Kawatana Manju” and “Kawara Choux” !

They have a huge lineup of products, including not only Japanese sweets but also Western sweets.

If you visit Kawatana Onsen, this is a must-visit restaurant.

Eating something sweet after a hot spring bath gives you an indescribable feeling of happiness.

Now let’s take a look at “The Original Kawatana Manju Sanshundo”!

HitaPapa

It’s a long-established, classic sweets shop in Kawatana Onsen.

Exterior

It is located at the intersection at the entrance to Kawatana Onsen hot spring town.

The parking lot is right next to the store.

Inside the store

The store is lined with a wide variety of delicious-looking Japanese and Western sweets.

In addition to their signature products “Kawatana Manju” and “Kawara Choux”, they also have a wide variety of other items such as pudding, castella cake, chiffon cake, and castella cake!!

There are so many kinds of sweets!

There are not only Japanese sweets but also Western sweets, and even sweets that combine Japanese and Western styles.

Delicious looking sweets

Kawatana Manju (10 pieces for 710 yen)

The classic “Kawatana Manju”.

The white bean paste contains milk, making it very mellow!

Mirin is used in the batter, giving it a fragrant and rich flavor .

The size of each piece is small, so you can eat as many as you like.

My sons (ages 6, 3 and 1) also love Kawatana Manju.

HitaPapa

The delicious flavors of milk and mirin make this a sweet that combines Japanese and Western styles.

Kawara shoe (190 yen)

This is the “Kawara Choux”, one of the signature products along with the Kawatana Manju mentioned earlier.

I guess it was inspired by Kawara Soba, a gourmet dish from Kawatana Onsen.

A cream puff with rich custard cream inside a crispy pie crust .

There seems to be a fair amount of custard cream in it, so it’s very satisfying to eat!

We recommend buying it at the store and eating it right away on a bench in front of the store or in your car!!

It’s super delicious.

HitaPapa

We recommend eating it while it’s still crispy on the bench in front of the shop.

Hot spring pudding (200 yen)

The outside is a little firm, but the inside is gooey and creamy, making this a “hot spring pudding”♪

The upper and lower layers have different textures and are delicious!

The caramel at the bottom is bitter and fragrant, and matches well with both the firm and gooey layers !

Pumpkin pudding (200 yen)

Next up is pumpkin pudding.

It looks a little more yellow than the standard “onsen pudding” mentioned earlier.

The surface is firm and the inside is also quite heavy and solid .

It has a texture that is the complete opposite of a soft, melt-in-your-mouth pudding.

Generally, soft and fluffy pudding seems to be popular, but I prefer this firm and heavy pudding.

The gentle aroma and sweetness of pumpkin spreads softly in your mouth .

Next, dip it in the bittersweet caramel at the bottom.

good!!

The firm and heavy texture of the pudding goes perfectly with the aroma of pumpkin and the bitter caramel!!

I love Sanshundou’s pudding, which is the complete opposite of the fluffy, gooey texture trend.

Roasted sweet potato (150 yen)

This is “Yakiimo-kun”.

It looks like a bun, but the filling contains butter and tastes like sweet potato!

It feels like both Japanese sweets and Western sweets!

This is a masterpiece that gives you a sense of the owner’s passion for creating delicious sweets without being bound by whether they are Japanese or Western.

Round Bolo

Maruboro is truly a case of “simple is best.”

The simple ingredients give it a delicious, rustic flavor!

Sweet and fragrant♪

It has just the right amount of elasticity.

Castella cake (400 yen)

The portion is quite large and 400 yen is a bargain.

By the way, a smaller amount of Nagasaki castella costs around 1,000 to 1,300 yen.

The ingredients are super simple: sugar, eggs, and flour .

It’s the simplicity that gives it its rustic flavor.

When you cut it, it’s very fluffy.

Along with the distinctive flavor of castella, it also has a gentle taste similar to that of steamed pancakes .

The sweetness is somewhat modest.

The simple flavor is different from Nagasaki Castella and is very delicious!!

The portions are generous, the food is cheap and it’s delicious, so next time I’d like to buy two or three to take home .

According to the shop staff, the flavor doesn’t deteriorate at all even when frozen.

Hot Spring

As an aside, the source of Kawatana Onsen is located right next to the shop.

It says “Toyoura Town Spring No. 5,” so it must be one of the several hot springs in Kawatana Onsen.

When I scooped some of the spring water in my hand and smelled it, I was hit with a strong scent of sulfur and iron!

A truly rich spring water!!

The waters of Kawatana Onsen are often pretty tasteless and odorless, but the incredibly rich spring waters at Kawatana Onsen completely overturn that image!

To be honest, I think the best source of Kawatana Onsen is Kawatana Town No. 5 Spring.

I wish I could bathe in this hot spring from its source!!

If you go to Sanshundou, please also visit the “Kawatanacho Yu Gogo Izumi” next door.

HitaPapa

There is a hot spring right next to the shop, so let’s go!
