This time we came to ”Shiraike Jigoku” (White Pond Hell) in Beppu city, Oita prefecture!
“Shiraike Jigoku” is one of the Beppu tourist attractions “Hell Tour” and is a huge, pure white hot spring hell 😄♨️
The grounds are beautifully maintained and resemble a Japanese garden with a large hot spring pond .
Shiraike Jigoku is located in Kannawa Onsen, the tourist center of Beppu, and is within walking distance of Sea Jigoku, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, and Oniyama Jigoku.
Beppu is also full of sightseeing attractions, such as the atmospheric hot spring town of Kannawa with its stone-paved streets, steam baths, and hell steam cuisine.



Now, let’s take a closer look at Shiraike Jigoku!
It’s a huge, pure white hot spring hell in the style of a Japanese garden.

Admission to just Kamado Jigoku costs 500 yen for adults. There is also a discount ticket for adults that includes a tour of all seven hells for 2,400 yen.

Shiraike Jigoku is located in Kannawa Onsen, the tourist center of Beppu.
In the surrounding area you can visit Beppu’s famous hell tours, steam baths, hell steam restaurant, and countless accommodations and day-trip hot springs.

The cobblestone streets of the hot spring town evoke the atmosphere of a hot spring.
Hot spring steam is coming out from all over the street drains ♨️
The area is filled with hot springs, and steam from the hot springs rises high into the sky.
It’s a hot spring town with a lot of atmosphere, paved with cobblestones.

There is a free parking lot at Shiraike Jigoku, but the number of spaces is not very large.
There are free parking lots for 250 cars at Umi Jigoku and Oniishibozu Jigoku just a few minutes’ walk away, so you can park there and enjoy a tour of the hells.
Kamado Jigoku and Oniyama Jigoku are also within walking distance.

A huge white hot spring! “Shiraike Jigoku”

As soon as you enter the park, you will see a huge, pure white hot spring hell !
The overwhelmingly large “Shiraike Jigoku”!
Anyway, a huge hot spring pond ♨️

The hot spring is so pure white and rich that you can’t even see through to the bottom!
Rather than hell, if you jump into the hot spring like this, it’s like a huge open-air bath!

A large amount of hot spring steam gushes out from “Shiraike Jigoku” !
It has a strong sulfur smell .

The sign that says “Nationally designated scenic spot” will get you in the tourist mood.
The grounds of Shiraike Jigoku are like a large Japanese garden, with pine trees and other features that give off a Japanese atmosphere.
It feels like the pond you often find in Japanese gardens has been transformed into a giant hot spring.
It’s like a Japanese garden with a huge hot spring pond.


Even so, the hot spring is so pure white and rich that it is mesmerizing to look at♨️
Ahh, I want to try soaking in this rich hot spring water.
The spring quality is boric acid salt spring, and the main components are sodium chloride, silicic acid, calcium bicarbonate, etc.
When the hot spring first gushes out, it is transparent, but as the temperature and pressure decrease, it gradually changes color to a pale blue .
It’s a mystery of nature😆
Apparently the hot spring water is as hot as 95 degrees Celsius!
It looks like a very rich hot spring.
Stroll around the park

We will take a stroll through the beautifully maintained grounds, which are like a Japanese garden.
You can walk almost the entire way around Shiraike Jigoku.

There is an observation deck (a slightly elevated location) from which you can see the entire Shiraike Jigoku.

↑This is a statue of Ippen Shonin.
Ippen Shonin had a connection with Beppu. It is said that in 1276, he visited Kannawa Onsen, calmed the hot springs of Beppu, which had turned into a hellish hot spring, and laid the foundation for tourism.
It is said that the steam hot springs in Tetsuwan were also built by Ippen Shonin.


↑This is the Mukaihara Stone Stupa, a prefecture designated important cultural property.
Apparently it was created in 1506!

There was a pond so I thought it was a hot spring, but it seems to be water (lol).

There are also places in the park where hot spring steam spews out.
If you stick your face in the hot spring steam, you can smell the strong scent of sulfur!
Whenever I see steam from a hot spring in Beppu, I can’t help but stick my face in (laughs).
Steam full of the smell of sulfur erupts.
