[Sushi ”Katsusushi no Tora”] Sightseeing,Travel,Gourmet (Kitakyushu,Fukuoka,Japan)

HitaPapa

The ingredients are fresh, big and delicious!

Hello! It’s Hitapapa!

I’m a working dad with three boys living in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, and I love going out to eat 😆😆

This time, we came to “Katsuzushi no Tora,” a conveyor belt sushi restaurant located in Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture!

It’s a conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Uomachi Gintengai near the Tanga Market. It’s so popular that even on weekdays, when it opens at 11am, customers come in one after another and it fills up quickly.

The defining feature of Katsushi no Tora is that it serves delicious, fresh sushi at reasonable prices .

Anyway, the portions are big and thick !

Extremely fresh and delicious !

“Katsuzushi no Tora” is directly managed by a wholesaler at the Kitakyushu Fish Market, so they can serve fresh, cheap and delicious sushi😆

So let us introduce you to “Katsuzushi no Tora,” a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant that serves fresh, delicious sushi with large portions!

HitaPapa

The high quality that can only be achieved by a fish wholesaler!

The exterior of Katsushi no Tora

Katsushi no Tora is located at the very end of Kokura’s Uomachi Gintengai (on the Tanga Market side).

Right in front of Katsushi no Tora is the kitchen of Kokura, Tanga Market.

HitaPapa

It’s located at the end of Uomachi Gintengai, and the Tanga Market is right in front of you.

The atmosphere of “Katsuzushi no Tora”

There are counter seats and table seats inside the restaurant.

The counter seats are divided into groups of two with a partition between them.

Even during the busy lunch hours, if you are dining alone they will make sure that no one sits next to you.

Even at the counter seats there are partitions, so there were many women using the restaurant alone.

HitaPapa

It’s a spacious counter seat.

There are five tables with seating for four.

Even though we were just two people, we were shown to a table for four, so we had plenty of space.

HitaPapa

The table only seats four.

You can play the gachapon once for every 2,000 yen you spend.

It’s a rather nice conveyor belt sushi restaurant, but they have gachapon machines for children, so it seems like it’s welcome even for families with small children!

Table top at “Katsuzushi no Tora”

Katsushi no Tora is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, but the sushi does not move around on a conveyor belt; all ordering is done via a touch panel on the table.

Perhaps due to the COVID-19 experience, it seems like many conveyor belt sushi restaurants have stopped serving sushi.

It’s true that not rotating the sushi is more hygienic, and it also reduces waste for the restaurant, so I think there are many benefits.

We have natural sea salt, Kyushu soy sauce (light), and Kyushu soy sauce (sweet).

Kyushu soy sauce (light) has a strong saltiness and very little sweetness.

When I eat sushi, I like both sweet soy sauce and salty soy sauce, so I usually alternate between different soy sauces to enjoy different flavors.

The green tea is in tea bags rather than powdered form.

The gari is thoroughly drained of its juices, allowing you to enjoy the aroma of ginger.

I prefer gari that is almost dry rather than soggy.

The teacups have the names of fish written in kanji!

I get excited when I go to a sushi restaurant and they give me a teacup with the name of a fish on it.

HitaPapa

There’s no conveyor belt of sushi, and everything is ordered via touch panel.

Menu of “Katsuzushi no Tora”

↓Depending on the day’s stock, you can enjoy items that are not on the main menu.

↓This is the grand menu.

Generally, most plates are one piece with a large topping .

Some dishes are available where larger ingredients are cut in half to make bite-sized pieces (same price) .

A single large piece of sushi is too big to eat in one bite, so bite-sized pieces are easier to eat.

HitaPapa

There are plates with one large sushi topping and plates with two sushi pieces cut into bite-sized pieces for easy eating.

Rotating lane

Although the conveyor belt rotates, there is no sushi on it, so you order on a touch panel and the plate arrives on a Shinkansen bullet train.

A dish that wasn’t on the menu was passing by on the conveyor belt.

On this day, the dishes played were “Pickled White Fish” and “Parboiled Tiger Pufferfish Skin.”

The sushi does not come with wasabi, instead you take the wasabi as it comes around on the conveyor belt.

And this wasabi is incredibly delicious !

It has a texture and flavor similar to freshly grated wasabi and smells amazing !

(Is it actually fresh wasabi?)

Recently I saw a video on YouTube of a high-end sushi chef eating at Sushiro, and the chef said that eating sushi with just wasabi and salt was also delicious, so I immediately tried to imitate him and eat sushi with just wasabi and salt. I could directly taste the umami of the fish and it was delicious!

HitaPapa

This wasabi is super delicious!

I’ll enjoy having sushi!

Fatty tuna 650 yen

I ordered this as my first order, as I heard I could eat a large, delicious piece of fatty tuna for just 650 yen.

It’s hard to convey the size in a photo, but each piece of “Katsuzushi no Tora” is pretty big !

This is a really unorthodox thing to do, but I brought kitchen scissors with me in advance to cut up any large ingredients (lol).

I have three children who will cost a lot of money in the future, so I don’t have the guts to eat this 650 yen fatty tuna in one bite! lol

So I cut it in half with scissors and shared it with my wife 😆

It’s super tender and the delicious fat spreads throughout your mouth !

I’m so happy because I don’t get to eat fatty tuna very often (I usually eat the cheaper ones).

It was delicious, but there was one problem: it was too fatty and my stomach had a bit of a negative reaction to it (laughs).

I don’t really like the oiliness of fish or meat, so this high-quality tuna had too much oil 😆

The fatty tuna was delicious, but I’m not sure how much my stomach can handle so next time I’ll go for lean meat 😊

HitaPapa

Fatty otoro with plenty of fat

Medium fatty tuna 450 yen

As for the second dish, I ordered the medium fatty tuna, which I had been interested in alongside the fatty tuna!

I cut the medium fatty tuna into small pieces with scissors just like I did the otoro, and shared it with my wife (lol).

It has less fat than otoro and is very tender and delicious !!

I’m not a big fan of fat, so I found medium fatty tuna to be more delicious than otoro.

But for better or worse, it was too fatty and my stomach couldn’t keep up with even the medium fatty tuna, so next time I’ll have to go for lean tuna 😆

HitaPapa

Medium fatty tuna.

Amberjack 250 yen

A huge cut of amberjack.

The flesh is firm and crunchy and delicious!

(It’s hard to eat it in one bite, so scissors are great for when you can’t bite off the topping.)

HitaPapa

Anyway, each piece of sushi is huge!

Salmon 300 yen

This is also a large cut of raw salmon.

It’s soft and has just the right amount of fat, making it incredibly delicious.

So happy!

Extra large grilled sardines 250 yen

As the name suggests, these are extra large sardines!

Grilling the meat makes the fat juicy and gives it a nice aroma.

I love sardines, so if they are available at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, I will definitely order them😆

Bluefin tuna lean meat 350 yen

This is two bite-sized pieces of lean tuna.

(I didn’t cut it with scissors! LOL)

When you eat a large sushi roll in one bite, it’s too big and you end up eating it in two bites, so I found that sushi rolls that are cut into two pieces from the start are easier to eat .

The rich flavor of the red meat fills your mouth and is absolutely delicious!

HitaPapa

A plate of bite-sized pieces of sushi has the same amount of ingredients and the same price as a plate of one piece of sushi.

Hirasu 250 yen

Hirasu has a delicious crunchy texture.

It was super fresh and delicious😆

A mountain of negitoro (finely sliced tuna) 300 yen

A fairly large portion of negitoro.

The negitoro also has a strong tuna flavor and is absolutely delicious!

Red sea bream 250 yen

Fresh and chewy red sea bream.

I love the light and gentle flavor of Thai food.

A mountain of whelks 300 yen

A huge pile of whelks!

There is no smell of shellfish at all, it’s fresh and very delicious.

The crunchy texture of the whelks is irresistible!

The taste of whelks is light, so adding lemon enhances the flavor and makes it delicious😆

At conveyor belt sushi restaurants, whelks are often sliced into a single piece, but I like the texture better when they are cut into chunks like this whelk gunkan.

Popping Tekkamaki 250 yen

As the name “Tuna Roll” suggests, the tuna really pops out!

This is a thick tuna roll filled with a generous amount of lean tuna.

And surprisingly, the tuna is almost medium fatty tuna!

Perhaps I was lucky, but the meat was quite lean, almost like medium fatty tuna.

The tuna meat is soft and the flavor of the seaweed makes it incredibly delicious.

HitaPapa

A tuna roll that’s almost like medium fatty tuna!

Amberjack 250 yen

The chewy and lightly flavored amberjack is delicious.

Chewy ingredients like amberjack are easier to eat when cut in half to make two pieces rather than one large piece.

Mountain of seafood gunkan 400 yen

A mountain of seafood gunkan piled high with toppings.

It’s filled with chunks of salmon, red tuna, white fish that seems to be either Hirasu or Amberjack, and sea bream!

This is how it looks from the side!

It’s so full of flavour (゚Д゚)!

At cheap conveyor belt sushi restaurants, the seafood gunkan sushi topped with a variety of ingredients can sometimes have a slight odor, but the seafood gunkan sushi at Katsushi no Tora has no odor at all and is extremely fresh!

It’s packed with so many different fresh ingredients, so it’s very filling.

The seaweed is freshly wrapped and crispy and delicious.

HitaPapa

It’s packed with fresh ingredients and very satisfying!

Egg 150 yen

A fairly large egg.

The flavor of the dashi stock is strong and the taste is slightly sweet.

The eggs are nicely browned when fried, giving the dish an exquisite taste with a sweet yet fragrant flavor!

I loved the eggs here!

They’re big, sweet, delicious, and fragrant – they’re the best!

HitaPapa

The large, sweet eggs are delicious

Flying fish roe 150 yen

Flying fish roe has a delicious crunchy texture.

This was actually the first time I had eaten gunkan made only with flying fish roe, but it had a light flavor and was very delicious.

It’s packed with flying fish roe and is cheap at only 150 yen.

Inari 150 yen

This inari sushi is really big ( ゚Д゚)

What’s more, it’s cheap at only 150 yen!

This inari sushi has a rich, sweet flavor with the aroma of brown sugar.

The richness and strong sweetness of the brown sugar is absolutely delicious!

The egg and brown sugar inari at Katsushi no Tora was cheap, big, delicious and absolutely fantastic.

HitaPapa

Quite a large inari sushi. The flavor and sweetness of the brown sugar is absolutely delicious.

Heaping serving of tuna and mayonnaise 200 yen

The tuna is quite large and has a good texture and is delicious.

This gunkan has a very large bite!

(Because they’re a fishmonger, I wonder if they don’t use canned tuna, but heat up their own tuna to make tuna mayo?)

White fish nanbanzuke 350 yen

Nanbanzuke contains lots of large white fish.

I love Nanbanzuke so much that it’s my favorite deli at the supermarket.

It was very filling and delicious, and 350 yen for it was a great deal!

Highly recommended for those who like Nanbanzuke.

Fish soup 350 yen

It’s hard to convey the size from a photo, but this is a really big bowl!

The bowl, slightly smaller than a udon bowl, is filled with plenty of fish soup.

What’s more, there is so much fish in it!

It has a lot of meat, so it’s very satisfying to eat.

The broth oozed from the large amount of fish bones and was incredibly delicious.

HitaPapa

It’s a big bowl of fish soup with a lot of fish bones.
