Hello! I’m Hitapapa and I love Beppu!
This time we came to “Umi Jigoku”(Sea Hell) in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture!
The huge and beautiful cobalt blue hot spring hell is
The hot spring steam is gushing out vigorously, and the steam and clouds are rising from Umi Jigoku in a towering manner.
A popular tourist activity in Beppu is the Jigoku Tour, which involves touring the seven hot spring hells. Sea Jigoku is the largest and is designed like a park.
Umi Jigoku has a large free parking lot that can accommodate 230 cars, so it’s a good starting point for touring the five nearby hells that are within walking distance. (The Blood Pond Hell and Tornado Hell are a little far away, so it’s best to travel by car or bus.)

In addition to the Blue Sea Hell, the spacious park also has the red hot spring hell “Akaike,” the Inari shrine “Hakuryu Inari Okami,” a free foot bath, and a large souvenir shop, making it a very fulfilling park.
If you don’t have enough time to visit all 7 hells, or if you only want to visit one, I highly recommend “Sea Hell” where you can see a huge cobalt blue hell in this spacious park.
Now let’s introduce you to Umi Jigoku!

The free parking lot is quite large and can accommodate 230 cars.
It’s a good idea to park your car at Umi Jigoku and use it as a base for touring the hells.

Purchase your tickets at the reception desk at the entrance.
There are already many people lined up.

As soon as you enter the park, you will see a pond filled with floating water lilies.
It says “Tropical water lilies” so I wonder if the pond is heated with hot spring water?

We cross an elegant bridge with an impressive red handrail.
The sign that says “Nationally designated name: Sea Hell” gets you in the tourist mood!

The grounds are well maintained and resemble a large park.

There is a huge pond in the park!
We haven’t seen hell yet, but this is a very pleasant and beautiful park.
It’s a very spacious and well-maintained park.

As expected of Beppu!
We can’t see hell yet, but we can see hot spring steam spewing out from within the garden!
The smell of sulfur is good
The giant cobalt blue “Umi Jigoku”

As we made our way through the vast park, we came across a huge “Umi Jigoku” with a huge amount of steam rising from it!
It’s a large hot spring pond of beautiful cobalt blue !

The whole area is covered in white steam !
It’s full of sulfur smell .
The smartphone used to take the photo is getting wet from the steam from the hot spring!
I don’t think it will break, but I’ll take pictures while holding the smartphone carefully in my hands.
The amount of steam is amazing!

When the wind blows and the steam moves a little, the cobalt blue hell appears!
However, on this day there was almost no wind and the steam was just billowing and stagnating in the spot, so you could barely see Hell!

These are the hot spring eggs made at Umi Jigoku, a specialty of Umi Jigoku.
A basket containing eggs is hung from the end of a bamboo pole, and the eggs are bathed in Umi Jigoku.
Hell’s hot spring eggs!
Freshly made hot spring eggs can be purchased at the shop.
We have hot spring eggs made in Umi Jigoku.

Next, we’ll look at Umi Jigoku from the observation deck (second floor of the shop)!
From this distance you can’t smell the sulfurous steam, but you can see it better from here!
You can get a better view of Umi Jigoku’s cobalt blue from above.

That’s an incredible amount of steam!
A huge amount of steam is rising up!
Of the seven hells on the tour, Umi Jigoku has the most amazing amount of steam.

As someone who loves hot springs, I would love to jump into this “Umi Jigoku” and fully enjoy the gigantic cobalt blue hot spring!
However, the source temperature is a whopping 98°C, making it hellish!
Beppu is truly amazing, with such a huge, vibrant cobalt blue hot spring pond!
By the way, I have been to Umi Jigoku since I was a child (I’m around 40 now) and many times since I became an adult, and I am just as impressed every time♪
I love visiting the hells of Beppu😆👍
A huge, mysterious hot spring hell with a beautiful cobalt blue color.
The red hell “Akaike”

This is a hell called “Akaike”(Red Pond).
In fact, there is not only a blue hell in Umi Jigoku, but also a red hell!

It is a red hot spring pond hell, giving it the feel of a “Chinoike Jigoku”(Pond of Blood Hell).
The Blue Umi Jigoku we saw earlier is so huge that this Akaike Hell looks small, but this Akaike pond is actually quite large!

A large amount of steam is gushing out from around Akaike Pond!
The smell of sulfur is overwhelming!

Akaike Pond is filled with red hot spring mud.
It seems to contain a variety of rich hot spring ingredients!
Ahhh, I want to stay in Akaike hot springs right now!!!
I guess it’s boiling water (laughs).
Although it is smaller than Umi Jigoku, Akaike Pond is well worth a visit.
Hakuryu Inari Okami

Within the grounds of Umi Jigoku there is a shrine called “Hakuryu Inari Okami.”
It’s right next to Blue Umi Jigoku.
I visited in February and the beautiful plum blossoms were in full bloom.

The shrine is located after passing through several red torii gates.
It was crowded with people from overseas.
Foot bath

There is a free foot bath in the gardens of Umi Jigoku.
It’s a fairly large foot bath, and plenty of hot spring water is poured into it, flowing out like a river.

Because the temperature of the spring water is as high as 98°C, it is dripped onto bamboo to cool it down before being poured into the footbath.
Cooling the hot spring water with bamboo is very elegant and stylish.
The steam has a nice hot spring scent ♨️
Let’s soak in the free foot bath ♪
